Why do we learn English?
The English curriculum at Ark Soane aims to help students see the world and their place in it through stories. Studying English is the attempt to better understand what it means to be human. It’s an attempt to understand who we are and why we are here. Through reading the best of what has been thought and said from all over the world, students will learn about the many experiences, struggles and emotions that unite us as human beings. Stories shape our lives and hold a mirror up to the human experience; students will be inducted into the grand narrative of identity, love, belonging, hope, suffering, society, among others.

Our approach
We proudly offer a broad, diverse and ambitious curriculum. Students will leave Ark Soane having read Shakespeare, Dickens, Angelou, Orwell, Poe, and Levy to name but a few. As well as reading challenging and life-changing stories, students will master spelling, grammar and punctuation through our rigorous KS3 curriculum. Students will also get the chance to develop their own voice as writers. They will experience the unique power of developing their own writing through study of both creative and non-fiction writing.
In Key Stage 4, students will study the AQA specification, where they will study a modern text, a 19th Century text, a Shakespeare text, a poetry anthology and language skills. We will equip students who wish to study English Literature or any World Literature at University with the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed and flourish. We also want all our students to leave us knowing that reading and books can change your life.
