Each pupil must study the core subjects of:
Additional support:
Pupils who are at risk of not passing English, Maths or Science have additional curriculum time in these subjects. They have additional time studying Geography and then choose to study one of the additional subjects or French.
English Baccalaureate
At Ark Soane, we believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to attain the English Baccalaureate (EBacc).
The EBacc is not a qualification, but an indicator that a challenging, academic curriculum has been studied. The EBacc focuses on subjects that are considered essential to many careers and university degrees.
To attain the EBacc, pupils must pass a GCSE in the following subjects:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- A humanities subject (History or Geography)
- A language (French)
Science offer
Most pupils will study the Combined Science course. Combined science ensures that pupils can achieve the EBacc and progress to A Level study in the three sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
A small number of pupils who demonstrate a real passion for science and a strong work ethic in science lessons throughout the year will be able to take Triple Science.
Languages
Our main curriculum language is French, and the majority of pupils at Soane will take a GCSE in the subject. Their learning in KS3 sets them up to succeed.
Pupils who know an additional language will be able to take an additional GCSE in this subject. Pupils must be able to read, speak and write in this language to be able to do this. Pupils will complete a pre-assessment and sit this exam in Year 10.
Preferences process
Pupils will express their preferences as to what subjects they will study during their GCSEs in the Summer term of Year 9.
The school will make the final decision as to what subjects students study, and will consider the following in making the decision:
- Pupils' exam results
- Pupils' behaviour and effort across the school
- Student preferences
- Teacher judgement
